GENERAL

Since we live in the Bay Area, we seldom stay in a hotel in Monterey.  This rare occasion came up and we decided to bid for a hotel room - and we got this one.  It's one of those hotels that you "accept" but will never "like", and forget about "love" unless you are a die-hard golfer.

PRO

Room layout - It's not a hotel building, but more like small condo buildings spread out and lined up along the golf course, very nice and private.  Our room faces golf course and it was great in the morning - fresh air and view of complete green, plus an occasional "where the ^%$# is my ball".

Location - It's conveniently located near the freeway, but not that far from downtown Monterey or Carmel.

Facility - It's a resort and it's on the Del Monte golf course.  For golfers this would be a big plus since it's supposed to be a top course after Pebble Beach and Spanish Bay.  It also has pools and some indoor facilities like 24-hr gym and pool / ping pong tables.

CON

AGE - This is a big problem - no matter how you renovate a hotel, 60+ years is a long time.  The buildings are in bad shape and time-worn details in the room are hard to hide.

Parking - It took us a good 10 min to find a decent space to park.  And there were lots of empty rooms around us!  Can't imagine if the rooms were full.

Service - Very typical Carmel-type of attitude: "we've seen too many rich people today."

OVERALL

Another great Hyatt Regency which I seldom regret staying at - but it really need a complete overhaul in order to appeal to younger people.  For people who just love Monterey / Carmel and want a nice hotel to stay at, this is the place.

Family-Friendliness Rating: SmileSmileSmile (out of 5)

Pro - Pools, room to run around, next to golf course (ie more running), kids love Monterey!

Con - Rooms hard to get to from parking lot, small rooms, staff ignores children (especially when they're standing on the couch - relax buddy!!!)
